pick of the week: The Minnesota Brewery Running Series is back for another summer and — just like earlier summers — it continues to get bigger. In 2012, Morgan Jappe and Nate Herrington came up with the idea of getting a local brewery to host a 5K fun run with the goal of getting some exercise, enjoying one of the Twin Cities' craft beers and giving part of the entry fee to charity. It started with a single event; this year there are 33 (the full schedule is at breweryrunningseries.com/minnesota). Next up is a run at the Urban Growler microbrewery, 2325 Endicott St., St. Paul. The run starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and wends its way through the neighborhood. Runners (the ones who are of age, anyway) get a beer when they finish.

Road work: The Golden Gate Bridge turns 80 Saturday, a celebration that turned up this bit of history: It originally was going to be painted black with yellow stripes, sort of a giant bumblebee effect. The original coat of orange was rustproofing, but people liked the way it stood out in the fog, so the designers stuck with that color.
