IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Ann Romney: "I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work."

Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior Romney aide, tweeted: "Obama adviser Hilary Rosen goes on #CNN to debut their new "kill Ann" strategy, and in the process insults hard-working moms."

Jim Messina, President Obama's campaign manager: "I could not disagree with Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong and family should be off limits. She should apologize."

Hilary Rosen tweeted: "@AnnDRomney I am raising children too. But most young American women HAVE to BOTH earn a living AND raise children. You know that don't u?"

Rosen then tweeted: "@AnnDRomney Please know, I admire you. But your husband shouldn't say you are his expert on women and the economy. #HeNeedsMore"

Ann Romney, who has battled multiple sclerosis: "Look, I know what it's like to struggle. Maybe I haven't struggled as much financially as some people have. I can tell you and promise you that I have struggled in my life."

Obama strategist David Axelrod tweeted: "Disappointed in Hilary Rosen's comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive."

Michelle Obama tweeted: "Every mother works hard, and every woman deserves to be respected."

Rosen: "I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let's declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance."
