Knee injury stops Serena Williams Serena Williams withdrew from the Open GDF Suez in Paris because of a knee injury, sending Elena Dementieva into a final against Amelie Mauresmo. Mauresmo advanced by beating Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 in a semifinal.

Williams said she hurt her right knee during play Friday.

"My left knee always hurts, but this time it's my right knee," Williams said. "Today I don't feel like I could have gotten there."

Andy Murray cruised to victory over Mario Ancic 6-1, 6-2 in a semifinal of the ABN Amro tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal beat fifth-seeded Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Mardy Fish cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory against James Blake in the semifinals of the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif. Fish will play the winner of the semifinal between top-seeded Andy Roddick and Radek Stepanek.

Peppers says he wants out of Carolina Four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers doesn't want to play for Carolina anymore and said Saturday he hopes the Panthers don't stop him from entering free agency by designating him their franchise player.

"If they decide to use the tag on me, the first thing that I'll be doing is requesting a trade," he said.

Peppers, 29, made 141/2 sacks last season but doesn't like coach John Fox's 4-3 defensive system and wants to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

• Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed was cited by New Alexandria, Pa., police for throwing a 2:50 a.m. temper tantrum Saturday at a convenience store because there were no towels in the restroom. The charges were disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, summary offenses similar to traffic tickets.

Shani Davis takes gold Shani Davis of the United States won the 1,500-meter speedskating race at a World Cup meet in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Davis won in 1 minute, 45.40 seconds, beating Italian Enrico Fabris by 0.48 seconds. Americans Trevor Marsicano and Chad Hedrick were third and fourth.

Ole Einar Bjorndalen of Norway and Kati Wilhelm of Germany won biathlon events at the world championships in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Bjorndalen won his 11th world title.

Shaun White of the United States won the halfpipe competition at the World Cup snowboard event at Cypress Mountain in British Columbia, where the Vancouver Olympics snowboarding and freestyle skiing will be held next year.

Obituary: Longtime sports publicist Joe Goldstein has died after a career in which he promoted everything from the New York City Marathon to harness racing to Evel Knievel's jump of Snake River Canyon. He was 81. Goldstein died of a stroke Friday in Boca Raton, Fla.

Cycling: Taylor Phinney of the United States won the 1-kilometer time trial on Saturday for his second gold at cycling's Track World Cup Finals in Copenhagen.
