Carver County officials have warned residents of a recent telephone scam that involves a caller contacting a victim and suggesting that they overpaid taxes, then asking if the taxpayer would like to "donate" a portion of their refund.

The call comes from a telephone number that appears on caller ID to be from a Carver County facility, but actually is being made from somewhere else, county officials said.

"These phone calls are not from a Carver County representative," said County Administrator David Hemze in a recent news release. "Carver County representatives will not call to inform you of a refund, ask for banking information, or request credit card or other personal information."

County officials advise anyone receiving this type of call to immediately hang up and contact their local law enforcement agency.
