TELENOVELA TRIVIA

• Like American soap operas, telenovelas got their start on the radio in the 1930s -- in Mexico.

• Most telenovelas are still made in Mexico, but Colombia, Venezuela, other Latin American countries and even countries in Asia and Europe have followed suit. Some are now being shot and set in the United States, in Florida and California.

• Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara started out as telenovela stars.

• The American prime-time drama "Ugly Betty" (2006-10) was based on a Colombian telenovela.

• Mostly due to the popularity of telenovelas, the Univision network is now ranked fifth nationally overall and on some nights beats higher-ranked networks in the ratings, including NBC and Fox.

• Unlike American soap operas, telenovelas run in both prime time and daytime, and have short runs, on average about six months.

• Univision premiered three prime-time novelas this week. Running Monday through Friday with English closed captions: 6 p.m., "Cuando Me Enamoro" ("When I Fall in Love"); 7 p.m., "Una Familia con Suerte" ("One Lucky Family"); 8 p.m., "La Que No Podía Amar" ("The One Who Could Not Love").

• To access closed captioning on your TV, check the owner's manual. Most can be found by selecting "Audio" or "Set Up" on your remote, then scrolling down to the "CC" option and turning it to the "on" position.
