A 16-year-old girl who was hit and killed by a driver fleeing police Friday night near 36th and Emerson avenues N. has been identified as Diana I. Garcia-Alvarado of Phoenix, authorities said.

Minneapolis police tried to stop the vehicle shortly before the girl was hit, but the driver fled. The hit-and-run happened about 9:55 p.m. The suspect continued driving for a short time before jumping out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The vehicle was still moving at the time and crashed into several parked vehicles, police said.

The suspect was arrested about a block away as he tried to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family, police said.

A handgun was found in the suspect's vehicle. The man had two felony warrants out for his arrest from another county, police spokesman Corey Schmidt said Monday.

The girl and the suspect were taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where the girl was pronounced dead. As of Monday morning, the suspect was still hospitalized.

Schmidt said he didn't know when the suspect would be charged.
