A teenage driver was killed late Sunday when he was broadsided by a pickup truck as he crossed a rural highway in northwestern Minnesota, the State Patrol said.

The 16-year-old boy in a Dodge Avenger was heading west on Norman County Road 39 in Borup when he crossed in front of a Dodge Ram heading north on Hwy. 9 at 9:59 p.m. It was not known whether the teen had obeyed a stop sign before pulling into the intersection, the patrol said. The car came to rest on its roof and caught fire. The pickup landed right side up, the patrol said.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was dead at the scene. It was not known whether he was wearing a seat belt. The pickup driver, a 20-year-old man from Enderlin, N.D., was not seriously hurt. He was wearing a seat belt and alcohol was detected in his system, the patrol said.
