A teenage couple from western Wisconsin jumped to their deaths before dawn Tuesday from the Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis, officials said.

St. Croix Central High School students Erika Borgstrom, a sophomore from Roberts, and Dakotah Coach, a senior, "took their own lives," said a statement from the School District.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said that witnesses saw two people jumping from the bridge over the Mississippi River at about 4:30 a.m. and are presumed to have drowned. Their bodies have not been recovered, the sheriff's office added.

Borgstrom and Coach "were excellent students and outstanding musicians" at the Hammond school, the district statement continued.

"They will be missed greatly by all who knew them. Our thoughts, prayers and support go out to their families, friends and the entire community during this very difficult time."

The St. Croix County Sheriff's office had issued a missing-persons' alert about the two. Borgstrom had not been seen since Friday.
