The DNR is inviting kids to come out this weekend and experience ice fishing. Bring a lucky adult with you -- and be extra careful out there. It's Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Weekend from Saturday through Monday.

WHO

Minnesotans who want to introduce a child to ice fishing. Or kids who want to introduce an adult to ice fishing.

HOW

Resident anglers age 16 and older do not need a fishing license if they are accompanied by a child under 16.

CAUTION

Be extra careful this year because of the unpredictable ice conditions, said Roland Sigurdson, MinnAqua specialist for the Department of Natural Resources.

In the metro, plan to go on foot. Just last week, Hennepin County banned cars, trucks and SUVs from all of its 104 named lakes and other bodies of water because vehicles were breaking through.

MORE INFO

The best way to determine ice conditions is to check with local bait shops or the county sheriff's office, Sigurdson said.

DNR ice safety information is available at www.mndnr.gov/icesafety.
