An SUV drifted across a two-lane road near Duluth and fatally struck a bicyclist heading the other way on the shoulder, authorities said Monday.

The collision occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday in Hermantown along Lavaque Road, just north of Morris Thomas Road, police said.

Killed was bicyclist Richard A. Brill, 44, of Superior, Wis., according to police. Brill worked for the University of Minnesota Duluth as director of technology for the Labovitz School of Business and Economics.

The SUV's driver, identified only as a 71-year-old man from Proctor, Minn., was not injured. He was not arrested, and results of a blood alcohol content test were pending.

Emergency responders came to Brill's aid, but he was declared dead at the scene.
