An SUV driver hit a traffic signal pole late at night in Mankato Tuesday and was killed, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Victory Drive and Raintree Road, where there are many retail outlets, police said.

John Michael Waters, 64, of nearby Janesville, was heading south on Victory when it hit the pole, said Police Cmdr. Dan Schisel.

Waters was not wearing a seat belt, Schisel added. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead there.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the SUV hitting the pole.
