A 56-year-old Rochester man was killed Thursday when the motorcycle he was driving hit a dump truck on Hwy. 16 near Fox Chase Drive near Hokah, in southeastern Minnesota's Houston County, according to the State Patrol.

The man, whose name has not been released, was on a westbound 2012 Honda motorcycle that was hit head-on in the eastbound lane by an eastbound 1991 Ford dump truck at 2:34 p.m. Thursday. The patrol did not say why the motorcycle was in the eastbound lane.

The truck driver, James H. Botcher, 83, of Houston, Minn., was not hurt.

In an earlier crash, an SUV driver ran a stop sign and fatally struck a 21-year-old motorcyclist in Apple Valley Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The motorist, Sharat R. Koppula, 41, of Rosemount, remained jailed Thursday on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide.

The collision occurred about 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 155th Street and Embry Path.

Thanks to video surveillance from a nearby business, police said in a statement they determined that Koppula "was at fault for the crash as he failed to obey a stop sign."

Police Capt. Nick Francis said Koppula cooperated with authorities at the scene and did not appear to be impaired by drugs or alcohol.
