A woman collapsed and died before dawn Wednesday in a hallway of an apartment building next to a downtown Minneapolis grocery store, and police are treating the death as suspicious.

The woman left a friend's apartment next to the Whole Foods Market on Hennepin Avenue intending to go to the parking garage and on to the hospital because "she didn't feel well," said police spokesman John Elder.

She collapsed in the hallway shortly before 5 a.m., Elder said. The person who had been walking with her called 911. Officers and other emergency personnel rendered aid to the woman, but she was declared dead.

Police did not say what made her death suspicious. The woman's name has not been released.

Officers have "interviewed people at the scene," but no one has been arrested, Elder said.
