A 24-year-old man who was shot by police during a drug bust in St. Paul earlier this year was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years in prison.

Miguel Lorenzanovilla pleaded guilty on May 29 to first-degree drug possession after police recovered $265,000 worth of methamphetamine and marijuana in a vehicle from which he allegedly ran on Jan. 17.

According to the charges, police stopped the vehicle after it was seen leaving a residence that investigators were monitoring for suspected drug trafficking.

During the ensuing foot chase, Lorenzanovilla jumped a fence along Interstate 94, and as a police officer tried to climb over it, Lorenzanovilla allegedly turned toward the officer with gun in hand. The officer then shot him in the buttocks.

In a separate criminal complaint, Lorenzanovilla was charged with using deadly force against a police officer as well as second-degree assault. A jury acquitted him on June 1 of the deadly-force charge. Prosecutors plan to retry him on the second assault count. A trial has been set for July 30.
