A suspect was killed on Sunday in an officer-involved shooting in Hutchinson, Minn., police said.
A police officer was shot in the leg and flown to Hennepin County Medical Center with a noncritical injury, Hutchinson Police Chief Dan Hatten said Sunday night.
About 4:15 p.m., authorities responded to a report of a verbal disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of Harmony Lane. A struggle ensued, and the suspect — the only person encountered by officers — was shot and killed, Hatten said.
The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident, which is standard procedure for Hutchinson police, the chief said. The question of who fired the shot that injured the officer will be part of the investigation, he added.
The officers who responded to the call came not only from the Hutchinson Police Department, but also the State Patrol and McLeod County Sheriff’s Office.
A traffic scanner recording posted on the MN Police Clips Facebook page indicated that officers may have been dealing with a suicidal male. Late Sunday night, however, Hatten said that the suspect’s mental state was still “undetermined.”
The BCA was sending crime scene personnel and agents to the scene, an agency spokeswoman said.
