Sunday Insider: The 3-2 pitch

April 23, 2011 at 11:37PM

Three observations ...• We keep hearing how Brian Matusz is a young starter to watch for Baltimore, but Zach Britton might be the better lefthanded pitching prospect. He throws 94 miles per hour with good stuff and goes after hitters.

• Oakland's Brett Anderson might have the best curveball in the game. Another reason to like the kid, and the future of the Athletics.

• Joe Nathan, Matt Thornton and Ryan Franklin have lost their closer's jobs less than a month into the season while Mariano Rivera keeps rolling right along at age 41. Amazing.

... and two predictions• Righthander Matt Garza will struggle in his first year in Chicago and barely be a .500 pitcher on a Cubs team that won't be able to provide him much offensive support.

• Despite getting off to a slow start, Michael Cuddyer will hit at least 25 homers and drive in at least 90 runs.
