The fact of the matter is that autumn has failed to arrive across much of theEast and South. Friday, very warm to hot weather will rule from Texas to NewEngland, and many high temperature records will be broken.Though this level of heat is somewhat unusual for this time of year, it hashappened before and it will happen again.

So why is it getting warmer instead of cooler as the normal temperature curvefor autumn would indicate? The answer is simple: The weather rarely adheres toanything we call normal. As far as the atmosphere is concerned, normal isnothing more than the average of all the abnormal conditions that have occurredover the past 100 years or so.

The unseasonably warm air mass will meet its match in the East this weekendwhen a cool front slips in from the north.
