The largest and most destructive hurricane in June was Agnes. Actually, thatEast Coast monster was a tropical storm for most of its existence and never wasstronger than a Category 1 hurricane. Agnes became renown for the tremendousamount of rain it produced from Florida to New York. The worst floodingoccurred along major rivers in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia,where there was more than a foot of rain. In current U.S. dollars, the damagefrom Agnes is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $15 billion.The most intense June hurricane was Audrey back in 1957. That storm remains thestrongest June hurricane on record and the only one to reach Category 4intensity during the month. Audrey was a medium-size hurricane that achievedwinds to 145 miles per hour before slamming into the coast near theTexas/Louisiana border on June 27th. The hurricane caused $1.1 billion (2008USD) in damage and was directly responsible for the loss of 416 people.
