The prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards were announced Wednesday and three of the 89 awards went to local operations. The Star Tribune won an award for overall excellence. The 40-minute compilation that was sent in includes a humor piece from James Lileks on how to avoid the flu, coverage of floods, lots of Vikings coverage and excerpts from the now defunct NewsBreak. Interim multi-media producer Jenni Pinkley said the recognition has a lot to do with the leadership of Brett Akagi, who has since left the paper.

"It's a great reflection on what Brett did to build video production at the Star Tribune," she said.

Akagi's former station, KARE, picked up two awards, one for its feature story, "The Tyler Project," and the other for its 10 p.m. newscast.
