A major winter storm will cause widespread travel disruptions across portionsof Europe and western Russia through the holiday weekend.An area of low pressure will gain strength over eastern Europe Wednesday, withsnow falling across Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. This storm willcontinue to strengthen Wednesday night and Thursday as it spreads snownortheastward into western Russia.
By Christmas Day Friday, a swath of 6 inches (15 cm) of snow will be on theground from near Berlin to Warsaw to Minsk to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Therecan be a few locations that receive more than 1 foot (30 cm) of snow when allis said and done. South of the storm's track, there can also be an icy mixtureof precipitation across portions of Poland, Belarus, the northern Ukraine andwestern Russia.
Snow and ice will cause numerous flight delays and cancellations throughouteastern Europe and western Russia through the end of the week into the weekend.
Roadways and rail tracks will be covered with snow, resulting in even moretravel headaches.
