For the purpose of the 2018 Vikings season, as Bill Murray so passionately compelled his cohorts in “Meatballs,” it just doesn’t matter.

But for the purpose of the Vikings’ financial future, "it just doesn’t matter" couldn’t be further from the truth.

So here we are, like Jim Carrey trying to realize the connection between Ray Finkle and Lois Einhorn in “Ace Ventura,” left to ponder: Who’s better Stefon Diggs or Adam Thielen?

Thielen led the Vikings with 91 receptions for 1,276 yards on 143 targets but was just second on the team with four touchdown catches. All of those – minus the touchdowns – were career highs for the soon-to-be 28-year-old, who signed a four-year $19.246 million contract before the 2017 season.

Diggs tied for the team lead with eight touchdown catches (his career high) while contributing 64 receptions for 849 yards in 14 games last season. But the 24-year-old has a full slate of shortcomings as a receiver. In his three-year career, he has never: caught more than 84 passes, recorded more than 903 receiving yards or played more than 14 games in a season.

But, the Maryland product’s upside is clear and the whole world took notice during one of the biggest plays in franchise history (the Minneapolis Miracle). The cherry on top? Diggs is scheduled for free agency after this season, leaving the Vikings to decide how he should or shouldn’t be paid relative to Thielen.

This debate won’t be solved here (that is up to you in the comments section and was kind of, sort of addressed by colleague Jim Souhan in this column). But SportingNews took a crack at it with its top-10 wide receiver list entering the 2018 NFL season.

And … checking in … at … No. 10 … is … Diggs.

Here’s what was said about No. 14 for your Minnesota Vikings:

“Diggs, who doesn't turn 25 until November, has a ton of potential for 2018 now that he's paired with a QB in Kirk Cousins whose big arm is tailor-made for the wide receiver's deep-route speed. Thielen thrived with Case Keenum, but Diggs this year will prove he's the true No. 1 with his scoring flair. With a potential mega contract of his own on the line, Diggs won't disappoint.”

Thielen was listed as an honorable mention, and the whole top-10 list can be viewed here.
