The suspect in a weekend slaying in Stearns County was charged Thursday with murder while he recovers from wounds suffered from police gunfire during a manhunt.
Marcus M. Barshaw, 28, of Walker, Minn., was charged with second-degree murder in the death before dawn Sunday of Jeffrey J. Schutz, 30, of Rockville, Minn.
While Barshaw is in the custody of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, he is being treated at the Hennepin County Medical Center. He will appear in court after he recovers.
According to the criminal complaint:
About 4 a.m. Sunday, deputies were called to Schutz's home in the 300 block of Broadway Street E. on a report of a man with a gun. The deputies arrived and found Schutz on the ground less than a half-mile from his home and dead from at least six gunshot wounds.
Two people said they saw Barshaw and Schutz arguing in the back yard. At one point, Schutz told Barshaw not to point his gun. Schutz began running and was shot numerous times by Barshaw, who then fled the scene on foot.
During the four-hour manhunt, Barshaw was found hiding in a nearby apartment building. He was shot by a deputy after coming out with what appeared to be a semiautomatic assault rifle and a pistol, and "failing to comply with law enforcement directions," the complaint read.
The Sheriff's Office said Sunday that Barshaw was shot three times.
