In many ways, senior assistant sports editor Naila-Jean Meyers is just beginning her time at the Star Tribune. She started in Minneapolis just two months before the pandemic.
Later this summer, she'll be in the early days of another big leadership opportunity when she becomes the Associated Press Sports Editors' next Second Vice President. In three years, she'll be the APSE's fifth woman president.
Meyers won an election for the position, APSE announced Thursday, and will add this role to her full plate starting in August. Meyers helps lead the Star Tribune sports department, among the largest in the nation. She also directs coverage of the Vikings, the NFL, the Olympics, and drives the department's digital and audience-focused initiatives.
Meyers is a mentor in APSE's mentorship program, and among her goals is working to improve connections between APSE members. She was voted in by organization members from a pool of four candidates.
"My focus is almost certainly going to be on the journalists," Meyers said in APSE's announcement. "But I don't want to forget that one of our main goals is to promote great journalism and produce great journalism. And how can we help our journalists do that?"
