The University of St. Thomas will be able to sell liquor on its St. Paul campus without having to get special events permits.
The City Council approved the university's request at a meeting Wednesday.
The council approved the liquor license -- with conditions -- on a 6-0 vote with Council Member Dan Bostrom absent. The license will be reviewed by the city annually.
St. Thomas will not be allowed to establish a permanent bar on campus. Liquor for special events can be sold only by the drink, and the sales are confined to three designated outdoor areas and inside 15 buildings. Alcohol can be sold between 10 a.m. and midnight with last call coming at 11:30 p.m. Sunday sales are permitted.
Another condition: St. Thomas is required to place portable toilets near the football stadium on game days when liquor is sold.
Surrounding neighborhoods had raised concerns about the potential for rowdy behavior resulting from increased liquor sales.
