St. Thomas captures track titles

The St. Thomas men won their 25th MIAC indoor track and field title and the Tommies women the title for the 10th year in row Saturday at the conference championships in Moorhead, Minn.

St. Thomas' men scored 178.5 points, 67.5 more than runner-up Hamline. Senior Brian Sames won the 800 meters and 1,000 meters. Bethel, St. Olaf and St. John's rounded out the top five.

In the women's standings, the Tommies' 161 points were 54 more than runner-up Gustavus, which was followed by St. Benedict, Bethel and host Concordia.

St. Thomas closed the competition with a meet record in the 1,600 relay (3:56.85).

Kaelene Lundstrum of Gustavus scored a meet-record 3,445 points in winning the heptathlon and tied a meet record in the women's high jump of 5 feet, 5¾ inches. Men's meet record were set by UST's Joe DeFrance in the 200 meters (21.96) and Gustavus' Tyler Geyen in the men's 55 hurdles (7.59).

U baseball Tom Buske allowed only three hits and one unearned run in eight innings for the Gophers in a 7-1 victory over Western Michigan at the Metrodome. Buske walked one and struck out six.

Matt Nohelty drove in two runs and Derek McCallum and Eric Decker each had two hits for the Gophers (7-3).

Sophomore Michael Kvasnicka was 1-for-3. Kvasnicka is the only Gophers player to collect a hit in all 10 games this year.

Etc. • Briana Hassett tossed two shutouts for the Gophers softball team in a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's in Tucson, Ariz. Hassett allowed four hits in the Gophers' 8-0, five-inning victory in the first game and struck out 11 in a two-hitter in the Gophers' 5-0 victory in the second game.

• The No. 7 Gophers men's gymnastics team placed third in a triangular meet with top-ranked Stanford and No. 2 Oklahoma at the Sports Pavilion. Oklahoma won with a score of 357.850, followed by Stanford at 356.400 and the Gophers at 347.950.

• The Gophers men's tennis team had its eight-match winning streak ended on Friday with a 5-2 loss at Washington. The No. 24 Gophers got singles victories from freshmen Phillip Arndt and Julian Dehn but fell to 10-2 overall. Washington, ranked No. 22, improved to 9-4.
