The Metropolitan Council included projects in St. Paul and Roseville when it recently approved $2.4 million for brownfield cleanup in seven cities.
The Sholom Home II project on W. 7th Street will get $101,400 for the installation of vapor barriers. The plan is for senior housing, which would include 45 rental units, 66 assisted-living units and a 90-bed nursing home.
The site, south of the W. 7th Street and Otto Avenue intersection, has been used for a gas station, auto sales business and bulk petroleum storage. It's part of a 65-acre area, much of which was an oil-tank farm, the city has been trying to turn into housing for several years.
Total Tool will get $200,900 for environmental investigation and soil remediation at a 3-acre site at N. Pierce Street and Concordia Avenue that was used for manufacturing. A warehouse and crane-repair plant will be built on the site.
The Har Mar Apartments, at Snelling Avenue and Hwy. 36 in Roseville, will get $121,500 for asbestos and lead abatement. New construction is planned to add 103 affordable rental units.
