How many bicyclists and pedestrians are there in St. Paul? City officials would like to know.

In September, the St. Paul will conduct a citywide bicycle and pedestrian count to find out. The Public Works department is looking for 35 adults to help tally those who ride and walk.

"We've never really done a citywide count of bicyclists and pedestrians," said Dave Hunt of the city's Public Works department. "The numbers we gather this year will serve as a benchmark for the planning work in future years."

The data will be used as a benchmark to plan where future trails and sidewalks should be added or replaced., he said.

The goal, Hunt said, is to conduct an annual count. Bike Walk Twin Cities does a similar count each year in Minneapolis.

In St. Paul, volunteers can request a certain part of the city to work in and the city will try to meet the request, but there are no guarentees.
