A four-hour standoff between St. Paul police and an armed man ended Friday evening after the man was taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The standoff began around 2:30 p.m. after police responded to a domestic incident on the 400 block of Jessamine Avenue E., said St. Paul Police spokesman Steve Linders. The man, who was armed with a gun, was considered suicidal.

A SWAT team responded and area residents were evacuated, as were students at a nearby school, Linders said.

The man, who was not identified, was transported to Regions Hospital shortly before 7 p.m. His condition was unknown.
