St. Paul police stopped a car early Monday morning for traffic violations and ended up arresting a man wanted for murder in Indiana.
Robert Lee Crawford was arrested at 1:18 a.m. Monday after the car he was in was pulled over near St. Albans Street and Thomas Avenue.
Crawford, 26, of Minneapolis, was booked on an outstanding murder warrant issued by the Lake County Sheriff's Office in Crown Point, Ind. Crawford was also arrested on a warrant for drunken driving and a new charge of giving false information to police.
According to the Times of Northwest Indiana, Crawford was charged with murder in December in connection with the fatal November shooting of Eugene Jackson Jr. in Gary, Ind.
According to court records, a witness told authorities that while he was talking with Jackson, Crawford approached, spoke to Jackson, shook his hand and then pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and shot Jackson multiple times. Crawford allegedly fled as the witness chased and eventually lost sight of him.
