The St. Paul police officer who shot and wounded a man while responding to a call about a domestic disturbance was identified Wednesday.
Joseph Higgins "feared for his life" before shooting Kevin Lloyd Carroll on Tuesday near Galtier Street and Fuller Avenue, St. Paul police said.
Higgins, who has been on the force for seven years, and Ramar Davis, a five-year veteran, responded about 4 a.m. to the call from Carroll's girlfriend, who told authorities the 47-year-old was trying to force his way into their Aurora Avenue home, said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a St. Paul police spokesman.
Higgins and Davis warned Carroll to show his hands and get on the ground several times before the shooting, police said.
The officers performed CPR on Carroll afterwards and called for St. Paul fire paramedics, authorities added.
Carroll was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Higgins and Davis remained on a three-day leave, which is police policy.
