A 31-year-old St. Paul man who was wounded by St. Paul police last June after he fired a shot that grazed a woman in the face was sentenced Monday in Ramsey County District Court to more than 10 years in prison.

Richard Dix Young III pleaded guilty last month to first- and second-degree assault. He was given consecutive sentences of 67 1/2 months and 57 months by District Judge John H. Guthmann.

According to police reports and the criminal complaint, Young shot 24-year-old Deanna Smith in the lip on June 25 while she was sitting in the driver's seat of a car near the intersection of Victoria Street and Fuller Avenue in St. Paul. Police believed that Young meant to kill Smith's cousin Kenneth Jordan, who was in the passenger seat.

Young was shot by police officers when he fled. His injuries were not life-threatening.
