A St. Paul man was sentenced Monday for the death of two passengers who were in a car with him when he smashed into a parked pickup on Valentine's Day.

Teng Vang, 21, was sentenced in Ramsey County District Court to five years in prison and could face nearly five more years behind bars if he violates his 10-year probation.

After leaving a bar, Vang was driving "grossly in excess" of the speed limit and on the wrong side of the road on Hazelwood Street near Arlington Avenue in St. Paul where he crashed around 2:24 a.m., according to the criminal complaint.

Chue Vue, 28, and Tou Vue, 29, both of St. Paul, were passengers in the back seat and were declared dead at the scene.

The two had to be identified by tattoos because their faces were unrecognizable. The front-seat passenger, Chee Yang, who owned the 1996 Honda Civic, was taken to Regions Hospital with noncritical injuries.

Yang told police that he let Vang drive from Malina's Sports Bar where they had been drinking.
