A St. Paul man was sentenced Thursday to more than 18 years in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend last May.

Willie J. Chestnut, 55, pleaded guilty in February in Ramsey County District Court to second-degree murder without intent in the death of Towanda F. Harris, 46.

Judge Rosanne Nathanson sentenced Chestnut to 18¾ years in prison. He will have to serve 12½ years before he's eligible for supervised release.

When given an opportunity to address the court, Chestnut complained about his plea deal and did not address the killing itself.

Harris' family attended the sentencing, but didn't make any victim-impact statements in court. They declined to comment afterward.
