A St. Paul man with a history of sex crimes broke into a woman's apartment last month and raped her, according to charges filed Thursday.

Jacob M. McKinley, 27, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with one count each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and first-degree burglary.

According to the complaint: The woman woke up in her St. Paul apartment about 4 a.m. on June 16 and saw a light coming through her bedroom door from the living room. She saw a figure of someone walking back and forth by her bedroom door.

Frightened, she pretended to sleep but saw McKinley looking into her bedroom.

The woman got out of bed and confronted McKinley when he walked to the front door.

He allegedly told her that "Mike" had let him inside, but the woman didn't know anyone by that name and ordered McKinley to leave.

McKinley allegedly charged the woman while she was in the bedroom doorway, pinned her on the bed and removed her underwear, the charges said.

He grabbed her cellphone and put it in his back pocket.

The woman kneed him and scratched him in an effort to stop the attack, and also gave him $46 to leave. When he didn't, and she tried to flee, McKinley caught her and allegedly threw her onto the living room couch, where he sexually assaulted her. The woman yelled in hopes that a neighbor would hear her.

McKinley ordered the woman to take a shower and eventually fled.

The woman called her roommate and left the apartment, where police later found a bloody sheet, an unsecure window with an air conditioner and fingerprints allegedly belonging to McKinley. The apartment was in disarray.

An upstairs neighbor later told police that he had heard someone downstairs yell "Stop!" on the night of the attack, but wasn't sure whether he was dreaming. The neighbor went back to sleep when he didn't hear anything else.

McKinley was later arrested at a St. Paul apartment he shared with his girlfriend. The girlfriend told police that they had fought and that McKinley was not home on the night of the attack.

McKinley allegedly told police that he met a woman on the street who invited him back to her apartment to have sex and then demanded money afterward.

McKinley's criminal history includes convictions for burglary and two felonies for masturbating outside windows while women were present.
