A 20-year-old man, who family members say has been raising money for jihad, faces a terroristic-threats charge after allegedly trying to stab his father over a desire to travel to Somalia, authorities say.

Sharmarke M. Duale was imploring his father to help him get a passport, according to a Ramsey County District Court complaint filed Thursday.

He allegedly lashed out with the knife to show his father "what will happen" if he didn't help the son "take me out of this country," the charges quote the son as saying. The suspect's mother intervened, according to police, suffering cuts to her hands.

Duale is being held in the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 9.
