In an emotional surprise announcement, St. Louis Park Mayor Jeff Jacobs on Thursday said he won't run for another term this fall. Jacobs has been mayor since 1999 and has served on the City Council since 1991.

Jacobs surprised the crowd gathered for the annual State of the City presentation. The colorful Jacobs usually gives an "inspirational wrap-up" at the end of the program. This year, after musing on the nature and meaning of power, he closed by saying he wouldn't run for a fifth term this fall. Jacobs grew visibly emotional as he thanked city staff and residents, but saved some of his trademark humor.

"There are probably 1,000 people in town who could do this job as well as me — and 10,000 who could do it better," he joked.
