A boy not quite 2 years old was taken by ambulance from his St. Cloud home unresponsive and with severe head injuries before he died the next day, authorities said Thursday.

Members of the Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division are looking into "the cause and manner of the child's death," a statement from police read. Police have yet to reveal the boy's identity.

According to police:

Officers responded to a call for medical assistance at a home in the 1300 block of University Drive SE. about 12:50 p.m. Sunday for a 22-month-old boy who was not responsive after police were told that he had fallen.

An ambulance took the boy to St. Cloud Hospital, where investigators began examining the circumstances of his injuries and their seriousness.

Upon determining that the boy had "substantial head trauma," he was moved to Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in Minneapolis for further treatment. He died there the next day.

Autopsy results from the Hennepin County medical examiner's office are pending.
