The death of a toddler over the weekend at a home in St. Bonifacius is being investigated by authorities.
The boy, identified by a family member as Cottrell Short, was 19 months old, said Lisa Kiava, spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
The boy's great-grandfather Lee Short Jr. said he was "just a happy, normal kid." Lee Short said that he had seen the boy a month or two ago and that he appeared healthy but that he didn't know how the boy died.
Police Chief Paul Falls said officers were summoned to the home in the 3700 block of Hillview Lane shortly after 11:20 p.m. Friday regarding a medical call involving a child.
The child was taken by ambulance to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia and died, Falls said.
Kiava said the call for help came from someone in the home.
Neither Kiava nor Falls would address the circumstances surrounding the child's death.
"There was a death, and there is an investigation [by the Sheriff's Office] as to what took place," Kiava said, declining to disclose whether the death is considered suspicious.
