WAR WITHIN A WAR
Today: It has been known as the Sioux Uprising, the Dakota Conflict and the U.S.-Dakota War, among other appellations. Whichever name is used, it was a dark and bloody time in state history, occurring in 1862 during the Civil War. Stephen Osman, recently retired site manager of the Minnesota Historical Society's Historic Fort Snelling, is a noted expert on both topics. Today he will give a detailed presentation on the history and causes of the Dakota Conflict at the Pond Dakota Mission Park. (2 p.m. today. Suggested donation, $2. Children, free. Gideon Pond House tours 1:30 & 3:30 p.m. 401 E. 104th St., Bloomington. 952-563-8693. www.ci.bloomington.mn.us.)
