Indiana AD to resign amid NCAA probe Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan will resign at the end of December amid new NCAA allegations that the school failed to monitor the men's basketball team.
The NCAA initially alleged former basketball coach Kelvin Sampson committed five major recruiting violations during his 1 1/2 years at the school but dropped one of the charges before school officials testified in front of the NCAA infractions committee.
Indiana is awaiting a decision on penalties from the NCAA.
But just as the school was announcing Greenspan's decision, after months of criticism for his role in hiring Sampson, the school was charged with another major allegation.

Niedermayer to play another year for Ducks Scott Niedermayer has ruled out retirement and will play another season with the Anaheim Ducks.
Team spokesman Alex Gilchrist says the star defenseman will play out the final year of his four-year, $6.75 million contract. Last season, the 34-year-old Niedermayer didn't return until December after the team won the Stanley Cup in June. Niedermayer has spent 16 years in the NHL.
• Sixteen months after signing Darcy Tucker to a four-year extension, the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out his contract. It will cost the Maple Leafs $1 million a season for the next six seasons, saving them $3 million over the life of the contract.
• Martin Straka has decided to leave the New York Rangers and return to his former Czech club. The 35-year-old forward scored 257 goals and had 460 assists in 954 NHL regular-season games and added another 26 goals and 44 assists in the playoffs.

Golf: Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt and Dudley Hart shared the opening-round lead at 8-under-par 64 in the PGA Tour's Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. Pavin used only 21 putts in his round.
Track and field: Banned sprinter Justin Gatlin lost his appeal to run in the U.S. Olympic track trials and said he will end that effort rather than take the case to the Supreme Court. Earlier this month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a four-year ban against Gatlin for doping violations.
Endurance running: The 100-mile Western States Endurance Run has been canceled for the first time in its 35-year history, with organizers citing smoky air from the hundreds of fires burning in California. The decision was announced on the event's website, three days before 370 runners were set to begin running from Squaw Valley at Lake Tahoe to Auburn, Calif., in the Sierra foothills.
