COLLEGES

NCAA champion coach Self staying at Kansas Bill Self has reached an agreement on a new contract with Kansas, only days after leading the Jayhawks to their first NCAA basketball title in 20 years.

Self met with athletic director Lew Perkins on Wednesday and Thursday, and they emerged at an afternoon news conference to say they had reached general agreement on a deal that is still being finalized.

The deal would replace the contract extension Self signed last year that pays him $1.375 million annually.

Self has indicated several times since winning the NCAA championship Monday night that he was inclined to remain at Kansas. There had been speculation that Oklahoma State, where he played and coached, might make a megabucks offer to lure him away.

Self said he heard from Oklahoma State on Wednesday night and felt obligated to discuss the open job there -- not because he wanted to leave Kansas but because of his "true affection" for his alma mater.

• Brigham Young's Trent Plaisted will submit his name for the NBA draft but will withdraw it if he's not satisfied with his prospects. The 6-11 forward/center averaged just under 16 points per game last season.

• Penn State President Graham Spanier told the Associated Press in an e-mail that the school and football coach Joe Paterno agree that a contract isn't necessary for the man entering his 43rd season leading the Nittany Lions. The current contract of Paterno, 81, is up at the end of the 2008 season.

IOC strips medals from Jones' relay teammates Marion Jones gave up her Olympic medals. Her relay teammates aren't quite as willing.

Jones' former relay teammates paid for her doping offenses, losing their medals from the 2000 Sydney Olympics as the International Olympic Committee stripped them from athletes who won gold with Jones in the 1,600-meter relay and bronze in the 400 relay.

Jones' teammates on the 1,600 squad were Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Andrea Anderson. The 400 relay squad also had Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson. The runners have previously refused to give up their medals, saying it would be wrong to punish them for Jones' violations.
