Sharapova wins, stays unbeaten for year Maria Sharapova defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 Sunday in the Qatar Open final in Doha, remaining unbeaten this season and earning her 18th career title.
The Australian Open champion is 14-0, including two victories in the Fed Cup for Russia this year.
• Andy Roddick won the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif., with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Radek Stepanek in the tournament final.
COLLEGES
Indiana out $4 million in sports buyouts Indiana University has paid more than $4 million since 2000 to coaches and athletic department administrators after they left the school, the Indianapolis Star reported.
One college sports expert said IU's most recent buyout -- $750,000 to former men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson -- shows that college athletics have "spun totally out of control."
The Star reported that Sampson's buyout, which IU agreed to Friday, brings to $4,012,000 the sum that IU has paid to former athletic department personnel since 2000.

Cool Coal Man wins Fountain of Youth Cool Coal Man defeated Elysium Fields by a neck in the $350,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Cool Coal Man, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, finished the mile and an eighth in 1:51.85 and returned $16.60 for the victory.
About 30 minutes later, another Nick Zito-trained horse, unbeaten War Pass, made a smashing 3-year-old debut with a 7 1/2-length romp that put him at the top spot in this week's AP Run to the Roses Top 10 list.
WINTER SPORTS
Junior goaltender sparks North Dakota Aaron Walski, making his first start, saved all 13 shots he faced and led North Dakota (21-8-2) to a 1-0 nonconference college hockey victory over Bemidji State (14-15-3) in Grand Forks, N.D. The appearance by Walski, a junior, marked the end of 55 consecutive starts in goal for Jean-Philippe Lamoureux.
Andrew Kozek scored the game's only goal with 4:55 left in the third period.
• Germany's Maria Riesch won the women's World Cup super combined in Whistler, British Columbia. Former Burnsville skier Lindsey (Kildow) Vonn led the American contingent with a sixth-place finish, but her lead in the overall World Cup standing was trimmed to 54 points over Nicole Hosp after the Austrian finished fourth in the super combined.
• American Shani Davis won his second speedskating title in three days, edging Denny Morrison in the 1,000 meters in Heerenveen, the Netherlands. The victory clinched the season title at 1,000 meters for Davis.

Cycling: Levi Leipheimer won the Tour of California for the second year in a row, beating Britain's David Millar by 49 seconds in the eight-day, 650-mile race that finished in Pasadena.
NFL: The Chicago Bears and tight end Desmond Clark agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2010 season. Over the past two years, Clark has averaged 13.2 yards per catch -- most among NFL tight ends.... Linebacker Derek Smith, released Tuesday by San Francisco, agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers.
