Southern Thailand Flooding and Mudslides

Locally heavy rainfall being produced by a persistent area of rain andthunderstorms has produced widespread flooding and mudslides across southernThailand over the past several days.Heavy rain from Friday into Saturday totaled over 11 inches in Nakhon SiThammarat, where the bodies of two monks were pulled from the debris of amudslide.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and thunderstorms produced rainfall amounts of over 6inches in Surat Thani and over 5 inches on the island of Ko Samui from Saturdayinto Sunday.

The unsettled weather has caused more than 20,000 people to be displaced fromtheir homes and that number is expected to continue to rise as the threat forheavy rainfall continues into the middle of next week.

Tourism has also been impacted by the recent flooding problems are more than 60tourists were stranded at the popular Nam Priwon Resort in the Nopphitamdistrict.
