PRIOR LAKE-SAVAGE

District developing a six-period schedule The Prior Lake-Savage school board has authorized a study group to develop a plan for changing the daily schedules at Prior Lake High School and the district's two middle schools.

Students in grades 6-12 would switch from seven daily class periods to six in the fall of 2011 if the board approves the recommendations of the group.

The group, which includes teachers, parents and principals, will report back to the board this fall.

The district says the schedule change would save as much as $1.45 million per year.

However, it would mean the loss of about 23 teachers, less time for electives and the elimination of high school study halls -- changes that have drawn criticism from some teachers and students.

The board has limited the scope of the group's work to study of a six-period schedule, with either semesters or quarters.

The board approved the move this month in a 5-1 vote, with Diane Ziemann dissenting.
