South school briefs: Rosemount band wins Youth in Music

ROSEMOUNT

Rosemount band wins Youth in MusicThe marching band at Rosemount High School won top prize at the annual Youth In Music Championships at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The eighth annual competition featured high school marching bands from five other states: South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Rosemount, which has won the competition in years past, topped nine other finalists.

BURNSVILLE

Final candidates' forum is MondayThe final candidates' forum for those running for school board in the Burnsville School District will be held Monday night at Sky Oakes Elementary School in Burnsville.

The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. in the school gym.

Ten candidates are running: seven for three four-year terms and three candidates competing for a two-year term.

Joshua Mathews and Tom McCasey are competing with incumbent Robert VandenBoom for a two-year term.

Incumbents Sandra Sweep, Ron Hill and DeeDee Currier are joined by challengers Steve Dove, Seema Pothini, Mark Korman and Mark Traikoff in running for the four-year terms.

Farmington principal moves to Park HighKerry Timmerman, an assistant principal at Farmington High School, has been selected as the new principal at Park High School in Cottage Grove.

Timmerman will take over his new assignment on Friday, the South Washington County Schools board announced.

The South Washington County School District said Timmerman is an administrator with experience in high schools in excess of 2,100 students. The district said he has experience in urban and suburban districts, as well as in international education.

Timmerman has taught social studies through the IB program at Harding High School in St. Paul. He also served as an administrator for both Harding and Farmington High Schools.

He spent two years in London as an IB instructor at the American Community School in Surrey, United Kingdom. He has coaching experience in football, basketball, tennis and soccer.

"His unique overseas IB experience will add to the richness of the Park IB program, while supporting strong academics for all students through Park's strong traditions," said Keith Ryskoski, the district's assistant superintendent for secondary education.

Timmerman's education includes a license in K-12 administration, a master's in education from St. Mary's University, and a bachelor's degree from Hamline University. He is also a Fellow in the Fulbright Institute in the United Kingdom and the St. Paul Public Schools Leadership Institute.
