South school briefs: Lakeville South to host science show

Chemistry students from Lakeville South High School will again host an entertaining science demonstration for all ages featuring rainbow liquids, vortex cannons and luminescent solutions.

The night will showcase the principles of thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, vacuums and high pressure.

The show will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 21 at Lakeville South, 21135 Jacquard Av.

The Minnesota State Arts Board recently renewed a grant that will allow Moreland Arts and Sciences Magnet School and Z Puppets Rosenschnoz to continue their partnership through December 2015.

The puppeteers at Z Puppets use performing arts to teach students how to manage and relieve stress at home and school. This is the third time the program has received the grant.

Z Puppets has worked with the school for two years, bringing yoga, puppets and music to students to encourage health and wellness.

Initially, the program worked with kindergarten and first-grade students in their "quest for calm." Then, it expanded to second grade and added a staff component so teachers, too, learned the skills.

To celebrate the grant renewal and the school's 50th anniversary, Z Puppets performed on Sunday at Harriet Island in St. Paul.

The Eastview High School robotics team is presenting an Internet Cat Video Festival from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Performing Arts Center at Eastview, 6200 140th St. W., Apple Valley.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m. with several cat-themed activities, like balloon animals and face-painting. Members of the Robotics, Lego League and Tech Challenge programs will give demonstrations.

The show will be similar to cat video shows at the Walker Art Center and the State Fair. Tickets are $5 and include a coupon for a free ice cream cone at a Dairy Queen.

Vicki Roy, a longtime Burnsville-Eagan-Savage school board member, is among seven recipients of Community Builder awards presented by the city of Burnsville last week.

The award is presented annually to individuals, groups and businesses that have contributed to the Burnsville community and improved quality of life there.

Roy moved to Burnsville in 1976 and soon began volunteering at her children's schools. That involvement led to serving 20 years on the District 191 school board.

She serves on the board of directors of Foundation 191, a nonprofit that expands educational opportunities within the district and is on the selection committee for the Burnsville High School Hall of Fame.

Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan will host an open house for interested families from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at the school, 3355 Columbia Drive, Eagan. Trinity School at River Ridge, a private Christian school in Eagan, recently installed solar panels to help power its building.

The move will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75,000 pounds annually — the equivalent of planting 5,015 trees. The system will produce enough energy to power six Minnesota homes all year.
