South news briefs: Two books featured in readings for kids

Two books about kids on the prairie are being featured this winter in events at the Scott County Historical Society.

"Winter on the Farm," by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Jody Wheeler, is on tap at a reading and crafts event for younger kids on Saturday.

The craft is snowflake printmaking.

The free event is from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Registration is required for supplies. The event is for kids aged 4 to 8. To register, call 952-445-0378 or e-mail info@scottcountyhistory.org.

Then, in March, author Joel Arnold will read from his novel for young adults called "Ox Cart Angel."

The book is set against the history of long journeys across the Upper Midwest on ox cart trails following the Red River and other arteries.

That event is 7 to 8 p.m. March 20. It is free with museum admission ($4 for adults, $2 for students, free for members).

Next week, the Scott County Historical Society stages a lecture and exhibition of wearable folk art traditions among the Southeast Asian Hmong people.

The event is 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27.

It seeks to celebrates Hmong culture through textile arts such as embroidery, ethnic garments and dance costumes.

Designs have changed over time, with modern elements joining the traditional ones. The presentation is free with museum admission.

Farmington's Knights of Columbus are hosting a spaghetti and bingo dinner this week to support the group's charitable and service projects.

What the group describes as its "famous, homemade, mouthwatering, to-die-for meat balls" accompany spaghetti at a cost of $8 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and a maximum of $25 for families. Children 5 and under are free.

Prizes to be given away include turkeys and hams.

The Knights are a Catholic fraternal organization.

The Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library will host its annual winter used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the meeting room of the library, 1490 S. Frontage Road in Hastings.

Many items will be for sale, including gently used hardcover and paperback books, DVDs, CDs, video and audiocassettes, puzzles and games. Items for children, teens and adults will be sold.
