Dakota County

Registration opens for controlled hunts

Hunters interested in participating in hunts to control deer populations in Dakota County Parks can register for permits beginning June 24.

The hunts this fall will focus on Lebanon Hills Regional Park and Miesville Ravine Park Reserve. There will not be a hunt at Spring Lake Park Reserve because of the ongoing construction of the Mississippi River Regional Trail.

A bow hunt at Lebanon Hills Regional Park will run from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day Nov. 2 through Nov. 18. The park will not open until noon on hunting days. Miesville Ravine Park Reserve will close to the public from Nov. 21 to Nov. 29 for a shotgun hunt.

The hunts are meant to keep the deer population to 10 to 15 per square mile. Too many deer could overeat native plant species, or leave the animals at greater risk of disease or starvation.

The online registration system will be open until Sept. 1 and a lottery drawing for the hunting permits will be held after that. For more information, go to the Dakota County website, www.dakotacounty.us and search for "deer hunting."
