South news briefs: Scott County Art Crawl coming next month

Scott County's third Art Crawl is coming up next month, and there are previews going on now in three libraries.

The crawl itself will weave through rural and suburban areas on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with more than 30 stops at artists' studios and other spots.

It will include a variety of mediums, including oil paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, and glass art, with items for purchase.

What's being billed as a pre-show exhibit actually will last through Oct. 13 at the Prior Lake, Savage and Shakopee libraries.

Tribe has new slate of leadersThe Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has a third top leader.

The post of secretary/treasurer will be filled Lori Watso, who had that position for a few years beginning in 2000.

Free Fridays for sixth-gradersFun-filled Fridays are coming up for sixth-graders at Shakopee's Enigma Teen Center.

Students will be transported from the Pearson Sixth-Grade Center to Enigma on Oct. 5, 12 and 26 and Nov. 2, 9 and 16 to hang out in a supervised environment. There's free food, ice skating, dodgeball, "Minute to Win It" games, karaoke and sundae parties. Students interested in taking part are expected to stay until at least 4 p.m. and must find their own way home.

Advance registration is taking place through Shakopee Community Education at www.shakopee.k12.mn.us/page/2952 and is required to take the bus to Enigma.

The so-called "One Way Program" is a joint project of community education, the city's parks department and Palmer Bus.

Anthropology professor Jeremy Nienow will share artifacts, documents and discoveries from the summer dig at a free talk from 3-4:30 p.m. in room 290 of the College Center building.

Nienow specializes in frontier settlements. This summer students dug through farm fields to sift what remains of Lewiston, a failed 1850s frontier town, along with two Native American sites.

The expo takes place from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Shakopee High School, 100 17th Av. W.

The day begins with a continental breakfast, then a talk on preventing identity theft, a musical performance, and finally lunch and drawings for prizes.
