South news briefs: Major Apple Valley intersection closes Friday night

Major intersection closes Friday nightOne of Apple Valley's busiest intersections, Cedar Avenue and County Road 42, will be closed for repaving overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

The closing will extend from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday and will extend for several blocks on all four legs of the intersection.

Cedar will be closed from about Cub Foods to the Caribou Coffee north of County Road 42. County Road 42 will be closed from about the county library on Galaxie Avenue to the Wal-Mart store east of Cedar.

Three honored for saving a lifePrior Lake has given three people an award for their effort in saving a motorist's life.

The city gave its Lifesaving Award to Kent Peterson of Prior Lake and two police officers, Prior Lake's Darcy White and Savage's George Luskey.

They revived Baldomero Valenzo Algulzar after he had a heart attack while driving.

Peterson saw the vehicle cross Hwy. 13 in Prior Lake, where it struck cars and trees. He found the man slumped over, unresponsive, and broke a window to reach him, giving CPR until the two officers arrived with gear to help. Paramedics eventually took over.

Medicare talk is later this monthAn expert from the Minnesota Area Agency on Aging will offer an overview and updates on Medicare and the federal Affordable Care Act, informally known as Obamacare, next week at Prior Lake's senior center.

The talk takes place at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 at Club Prior, 16210 Eagle Creek Av.

Seniors may arrange with Medicare advisers in November to help compare plan options by calling 952-447-9783, city officials report. Medicare open enrollment runs through Dec. 7.

Craft brewers share their knowledgeIf you'd like to hear more about craft beer, Savage's municipal liquor folks are inviting you to free tastings and chats with people from that industry.

From 4-7 p.m. each Tuesday at Marketplace Liquor, representatives of craft breweries will provide samples and talk about why the beers taste the way they do.

Oral history of Scott veterans is backThe Scott County Historical Society's oral history of World War II through the eyes of county veterans has been reprinted after a year's hiatus.

Next month Tom Melchior, who gathered the tales, will talk about his experiences over nearly three years interviewing more than 70 veterans.

The presentation is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Stans Museum, 235 S. Fuller St., Shakopee. It's free for society members, or $4 for adults and $2 for students. The book goes for $30.
